My name is Salwa Ibrahim, and as a cannabis entrepreneur, activist, and pioneer, I’ve experienced firsthand the hurdles, paperwork, and regulations that come with launching a successful cannabis business.
My Journey to Building a Successful Cannabis Business
I’m originally from Oakland, California, and I’ve been involved in the cannabis industry since 2008 when I started at Oaksterdam University advocating for drug policy reform and legalization. From there, I launched the Prop 19 campaign to legalize cannabis in California, which unfortunately led to a government raid on Oaksterdam University. Despite this setback, I applied for and won my first dispensary permit, which I grew into a multimillion-dollar, vertically integrated business, becoming the first plant-touching company to go public in the US.
Over the last 15 years, I’ve learned some hard lessons while navigating the cannabis industry and achieving my dreams. But now, I’m excited to share these lessons, hacks, and tips with you to help you build a successful cannabis business. I’ll cover everything from permitting, scaling, accounting, branding, and mental health. Consider me your cannabis auntie who’s always ready to chat about all aspects of the cannabis industry while encouraging you to navigate your own path and find success in your plant-based medicine business.
Of course, no journey in the cannabis industry is without its challenges. The past year has been one of the most difficult times of my life as California goes through a market correction or collapse. I’ve had to close down some of my businesses and holdings and untangle complicated knots that resulted in significant losses. But I’ve used this experience as a learning opportunity to reflect and observe. I’m committed to sharing my mistakes, shortcomings, and lessons learned with you through the High-Class podcast, where we’ll discuss all aspects of the cannabis industry and business.
